The maps in the Toronto Census Atlas Online were created by combining boundary files (spatial data) with census data in a mapping program called ArcView. Statistics Canada was the source for both the boundary files and the census data. ArcView is a product of ESRI Corporation and is available on a public access PC in the Map Library, 5th floor, Robarts Library. Some usage restrictions apply.

Section 1. Importing Census Files into ArcView

The following instructions are provided specifically for the Windows 3.11 setup on the the public access PC in the Map Library.

ArcView uses a seperate program called Import to translate data from an ArcInfo export file into an ArcView readable format. On the public access PC in the Map Library, this program is available under the ArcView menu icon.

Use the Import Program  (in Windows)

to convert an ArcInfo export file containing census digital boundary files to a ArcView usable coverage

	source file			destination file
	(filename.e00)		(anyname)

	ie.

	c:\data\arc\gca535ct.e00 c:\public\temp\tor91


Open ArcView (in Windows)


Open the boundary file in ArcView

	Window "Untitled"
		New Button - activates window "View1"
			View  - Add Theme -select theme
			Theme - Table - activates "Attributes of..." table window


Open the data file in ArcView

	Project - Add Table - select datafile to add - datafile.dbf window activated


Editing the datafile.dbf

	Table - Start Editing
		Edit - Add Field	for the new ct_name field

Give new field a name 
	ie.  "Ctcode"  (this name does not have to be the same 
	name as in the boundary file)

			Field type:  String
			Width: 7
		
		Make the field current - highlight its label by clicking on it
			Field - Calculate
				[Geography].Left(7)



		If the datafile has a record for the summation of all its CTs, do this:
			Click on the record to be deleted - it will highlight in yellow
			(to de-select:  Edit - Select_None)
				Edit - Delete_Records


	Note:  When you are finished editing, make sure you go to 

	            Table  -  Stop Edits
	                   -  Save Edits, 

		or else Join will not work.


Prepare the datafile for linkage

	Make the datafile.dbf window active
		Click on the field label which will join to the boundary file
		Sort datafile records in ascending order (use button)

Prepare the boundary file for linkage

	Now, make the boundary file window active
		Click on the field label to which the datafile will be joined 
		Sort boundary file records in ascending order (use button)

Joining the datafile to the boundary file

	Make sure that the boundary file is the destination file - it is active
		Table - Join - the datafile should disappear
			Scroll along the boundary file to see if the datafile data fields are present

		
Mapping the datafile data

	Activate window "View1"
		Theme - Edit Legend - activates the legend editor
			Legend type: Graduated colour
			Classification Field:  select the feature to map
				There are many things here to customize
					Press Apply button
