DATA ERRORS Please be advised that errors have been detected with four variables and the resulting data on this CD-ROM product. The two variables, FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME WEEKS WORKED IN 1995 BY THE MALE SPOUSE, MALE COMMON-LAW PARTNER, MALE LONE PARENT OR MALE NON-FAMILY PERSON (FPTWKM) and FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME WEEKS WORKED IN 1995 BY THE FEMALE SPOUSE, FEMALE COMMON-LAW PARTNER, FEMALE LONE PARENT OR FEMALE NON-FAMILY PERSON (FPTWKF), were found to contain unjustifiably high counts in their "Not applicable" categories. The source code used in the creation of the variables was examined and it was found to be in error. The logic used in the derivation of the variables lacked specificity and, as a result, families may have been erroneously classified according to the characteristics of a member to whom the concept did not apply. Furthermore, the code for LEGAL MARITAL STATUS OF THE MALE COMMON-LAW PARTNER, MALE LONE PARENT OR MALE NON-FAMILY PERSON (MARSTLM) and LEGAL MARITAL STATUS OF THE FEMALE COMMON-LAW PARTNER, FEMALE LONE PARENT OR FEMALE NON-FAMILY PERSON (MARSTLF) incorrectly assigned a large number of units to the divorced category, and this thereby affected the quality of the remaining categories. The discrepancies have now been corrected, and the present data for these variables has been verified to be correct. Also, all other variables have been completely re-verified and are correct on this CD-ROM product. No other problem variables were found on either the 1996 Census PUMF Households and Housing or Individuals Files. In addition, the control counts for the above variables were updated in the 1996 PUMF Families File User Documentation. DATA QUALITY INFORMATION INCONSISTENCIES Inconsistencies were also identified with some of the data quality information found on all three 1996 Census PUMF files. After a thorough review of the data quality information, all errors relating to data quality information have now been corrected. The following is a list of the inconsistencies that were identified: 1. Errors were identified in the "Quality of Estimates" tables found on all three 1996 PUMF files. An incorrect formula was used for calculating the coefficient of variation in the case of quantitative variables (e.g. income) for these tables. The "Quality of Estimates" tables can be found in Chapter III (Sampling Method and Data Quality) of the 1996 PUMF User Documentation. 2. Since Example 4 in Chapter III uses results obtained from the "Quality of Estimates" tables, this example was also incorrect on all three files. 3. Further to the main error mentioned above, some inconsistencies were also identified between the English and French versions of the "Quality of Estimates" files. 4. In addition to the User Documentation, the following "Quality of Estimates" files were also affected by the problems noted above. 1996 Census PUMF Individuals File: \ASCII\FRANCAIS\DOC\WORD.etc\qualfra.xls \ASCII\ENGLISH\DOC\WORD.etc\qualeng.xls \Rec96cen\DOCUMENT\F\ qualfra.xls \Rec96cen\DOCUMENT\E\qualeng.xls 1996 Census PUMF Families File: \ASCII\FRANCAIS\DOC\WORD.etc\qualfra.xls \ASCII\ENGLISH\DOC\WORD.etc\qualeng.xls \Rec96cen\DOCUMENT\E\qualeng.xls \Rec96cen\DOCUMENT\F\qualfra.xls 1996 Census PUMF Households and Housing File: \ASCII\FRANCAIS\DOC\WORD.etc\hhqualf.xls \ASCII\ENGLISH\DOC\WORD.etc\hhqualeng.xls \Rec96cen\DOCUMENT\F\qualfra.xls \Rec96cen\DOCUMENT\E\qualeng.xls CENSUS FAMILY TYPE (CFTYPE) Explanatory Note An explanatory note has been appended to the description of the CENSUS FAMILY TYPE (CFTYPE) variable in the 1996 Census PUMF Families File User Documentation. The appended note provides additional clarification regarding conceptual differences which can occur when the CFTYPE variable is cross-tabulated with the PRIMARY HOUSEHOLD MAINTAINER INDICATOR FOR THE MALE SPOUSE, MALE COMMON-LAW PARTNER, MALE LONE PARENT OR MALE NON-FAMILY PERSON (HMAINM) or PRIMARY HOUSEHOLD MAINTAINER INDICATOR FOR THE FEMALE SPOUSE, FEMALE COMMON-LAW PARTNER, FEMALE LONE PARENT OR FEMALE NON-FAMILY PERSON (HMAINF) variables in the 1996 PUMF Families File. For further information, please refer to the description of the CFTYPE variable in the 1996 PUMF Families File User Documentation.
