Saikkonen G0000072 A PURPOSE: Voting records for each polling station, electoral district and province for all candidates in the 1972 general election - pursuant to Subsection 59(9) of the Canada Elections Act. B DESCRIPTION: The file is arranged by province, candidate, polling division, constituency total and majority records. Each of the above components are records of 220 bytes in the sequence shown. There are different codes in each record (col. 6) to identify the unique type of record. The information includes: 1. Population. 2. Candidate name, address, occupation and party affiliation. 3. Polling division name, identification, ballots, unused ballots, winning candidate, runners up with difference in votes. C METHODOLOGY: All polling divisions report via the returning officer to the Chief Electoral Officer using forms 138 and 61. The data received is stored on magnetic tape. D SAMPLING: Universal, i.e. all polling stations, candidates and votes. E PROCESSING INFORMATION: This file is processed to Class 3 level. This version of the file has had packed decimal variables converted to character. 2. Electoral districts are numbered sequentially for each province and are identified in the Constituency Record. 5. Polling stations are listed sequentially within the electoral district and are individually identified. 6. The candidate code, cols. 7-8, in the Candidate Record is a sequential identifier cross-referenced to Polling Division Records, Constituency Total Records, and Majority Record. That is, the first candidate will be identified as candidate 1, the second as 2, etc., for all other records relating to that particular electoral district. 7. Party codes are: 01 - Liberal 02 - Progressive Conservative 03 - New Democratic Party 04 - Social Credit 05 - independent 8. The file is arranged hierarchically with the 11 Province Records at the top. Each record, regardless of type, is 220 bytes long. A complete report for a province or electoral district will vary in the number of records according to the number of electoral districts and polling stations respectively. H CODEBOOK: Follows. I NOTES: The tape is in upper and lower case alphabetics. To access the tape on IBM equipment, the "TN" print chain must be used, e.g. the J.C.L. should include a statement on the "SYSPRINT DD" card of "UCS = (TN,,VERIFY)" where the "VERIFY" parameter is optional. This is a system dependent feature and should be checked with systems personnel at the installation used.
